About

Aimée Jo Francis: I’ve recently graduated from Coventry University MDes Product Design (Master of Design) First Class, with Honors. I am currently seeking opportunities in Design, Research, Medical, Product, Strategy and similar areas. The idea is to gain some experience to aid my development towards a PhD in future. This blog started off as a university project during my year at TU Delft in The Netherlands, but I was too busy to continue it during my final year (what with running a lot of the degree show social media alongside). The aim of this blog is a combination of showcasing … Continue reading About

Weekend in Luxembourg 15th – 17th May

After the short trip to Lüneburg & Hamburg, I felt as though venturing further was needed. After all, we’ve got a lot of bank holidays in the months of April & May in The Netherlands. Coincidentally, we witnessed some history take place on the day of arrival. The first gay prime minister of Luxembourg to get married! What’s more interesting is that unlike the UK, or even most EU countries, he walked down the streets freely, the parliamentary buildings had no guards outside of them and there’s just a general feeling of peace there. Weekend in Lüneburg & Hamburg

Over the weekend (Friday – Sunday, leaving Monday morning) I made a trip over to Lüneburg to see an old friend. We hadn’t had contact properly for 5 years so was a nice surprise to see how much we’ve both changed as people. I had a little tour of Lüneburg & then we went to a festival in Hamburg & sight seeing around the city. It was exactly as I expected, the combination of ‘picture perfect’ German ‘fairy tale’ like streets & architecture, combined with the industrial German efficiency feel. Around Lüneburg:                 … Continue reading Weekend in Lüneburg & Hamburg

Quater 3 – Flying Quadcopters & App Development

The third quater has come to a close and it has been incredibly interesting to say the least. I started off taking the Mechatronics & Software courses, instantly feeling I was out of my comfort zone straight away. But, that was kind of the idea. I wanted to take more difficult courses to see where I can push my skills for my own development. Like in the first semester the ‘go in the deep end and see if you survive’ mentality. In truth Mechatronics I could keep up with for the first couple of weeks, not realizing it was an … Continue reading Quater 3 – Flying Quadcopters & App Development

Semester 2 – Quadcopter

3 Weeks into semester 2 already and we have got a lot going on already. The primary focus over the next 6/7 coming weeks is a drone quadcopter. In mechatronics we’re making the drone itself, programming it etc. with the aim to at least get it to fly, keeping the goal simple but hoping to reach further than that (fingers crossed!). We have managed to nicely interlink the other elective course of software with this project, in which we’re going to make a drone flying app for android. If all goes as planned we’re going to be able to fly our own … Continue reading Semester 2 – Quadcopter

Conclusion of Semester 1 & Presentation

So we’ve had our presentation, written the group report (70 pages) and just finishing off the individual reflection. I think as a team we’ve done pretty well. The experience as a whole has been invaluable: what it’s like to work with engineers, different types of people from different backgrounds, as we were a total mix on this minor. My presentation skills have improved, visuals have also become much faster as I wouldn’t dare ask an engineer to make a poster now – the result of that as I’ve seen is a lovely blue to orange gradient of some form and just … Continue reading Conclusion of Semester 1 & Presentation

Nigor Update II – With Prototype

Prototyping became underway this week with problem after problem appearing. Because we are strained for time we’ve had to improvise as the system is pretty complicated. In an ideal world we would of have multiple sketch models prior to finalize the size etc. but with multiple things ongoing at the same time this became more and more impossible. We had our frame of the mirror originally cut at laserbeest, but we didn’t really think about potential strain on the structure. So the structure fitted together ok to start with, but when we started hammering in the last bits gently the … Continue reading Nigor Update II – With Prototype
